In today's world, technology increasingly plays a role in learning and education. Teachers and students alike are are using social networks (among other technologies) to communicate, build relationships, and engage students in a different way compared to the formal classroom setting. According to a study on the use of social networking as a tool for education, "social networking services have been shown to foster social learning while engaging students in a complex array of communicative and creative endeavors including new literacy practices." I have found this to be extremely true and perhaps more beneficial. I have been in many college courses that use computer technology as the classroom setting. These technologies allow for the use of forums, debates, homework assignments, communication between teacher and student, among many other uses. Although I have yet to communicate to an educator through social networks, I have found social networks like Facebook to be a useful tool when communicating with classmates. Online classes have become extremely popular in education. Colleges/universities are using online classes regularly to facilitate education, this method of learning is more convenient and is less time consuming. Through some of the online classes I have been enrolled in, I have found the learning to be more efficient and beneficial compared to the formal classroom setting. I believe students communicate with each other and their professor more frequently and efficiently, it just seems like more people get involved online because of forums and debates.
Generation "Always On"
This is the idea that the generation of people born around 1990 and on are apart of the group "generation always on". So basically, we are constantly connected to our peers and always have access to news and information. This idea has many positives and also has many negatives. With this being said, I feel that human kind should take advantage of the internet and our ability to have information at the click of a button, but we need to remember that social skills, human interaction, and being apart of the physical world is the most important and beneficial aspect of education and learning. The internet is a very useful tool, but we need to be cautious of "always being on" and make sure we preserve what is human.
